Prince George County was formed in 1703 in the Virginia Colony from a portion of Charles City County. It was named for Prince George of Denmark, husband of the heir to the throne of England, Princess Anne. Extending from the Charles County line on the south all the way to the Pennsylvania border, the new county marked Maryland’s western frontier. It remained the frontier county until 1748, when the westernmost regions were granted their own government, and Prince George’s County’s northern boundary became basically the line it is today.
Prince George is located in the heart of Virginia, 25 miles southeast of Richmond. It is primarily a developing suburban county, bordered on the north by the James River and the City of Hopewell, and on the west by the Appomattox River and the City of Petersburg. The county is part of the Richmond-Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).
Prince George is the county seat. Other towns include Disputanta, Fort Lee (a military base), and Garysville.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 730 km² (282 mi²). 688 km² (266 mi²) of it is land and 42 km² (16 mi²) of it (5.76%) is water.
