Goochland County was formed from the original shire of Henrico in May 1728 and named for the new Lieutenant Governor, William Gooch. Goochland was the first county created in Virginia Commonwealth after the original eight shires were developed.
In 1728, Goochland stretched westward to the Blue Ridge Mountains along both sides of the James River encompassing the present day Powhatan, Fluvana, Cumberland, Albermarle, Chesterfield, Buckingham, Appomattox, Amherst, and Nelson Counties. Today, Goochland is bordered by the James River to the south, by Henrico County in the east, Fluvanna County to the west, and is bounded to the east by Henrico County, and to the north by Louisa and Hanover Counties.
Goochland is the county seat. Other towns include, but are not limited to, Beaumont, Croziwer, Maidens, Manakin, Manakin-Sabot, and State Farm.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 751 km² (290 mi²). 737 km² (284 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (6 mi²) of it (1.92%) is water.
