On May 25th, 1749, the Virginia General Assembly passed the act that separated Chesterfield from Henrico County and created the new county. The county is named for Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield. Lord Chesterfield was famous for his “good manners and writings.”
According to Wikipedia, the state’s first railroad, the Chesterfield Railroad, transported coal from mines near Falling Creek in what is now the Midlothian area to the docks at the fall line at the head of navigation of the James River near Manchester (directly across from Richmond) in 1831. Chesterfield Cigarettes were named for this county and its tobacco industry.
Manchester was the county seat until 1874 when Chesterfield was named the current county seat. Chesterfield and the county is located in and near the Richmond metro area. Fentress and South Norfolk are two other major towns in this county. There are approximately fourteen other unincorporated towns and communities in Chesterfield County, including Midlothian, which is practically a western suburb to Richmond, Bermuda Hundred, Matoaca, and Bon Air.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,132 km² (437 mi²). 1,103 km² (426 mi²) of it is land and 29 km² (11 mi²) of it (2.57%) is water.
