Campbell County location.Campbell County was established in 1782 from Bedford County. The county was named for Revolutionary War hero, General William Campbell, known for the 1780 Battle of King’s Mountain.

Towns located in Campbell County include Rustburg, the county seat, and Altavista, Brookneal, Concord, Evington, Gladys, Lynch Station, and Naruna. Campbell County is adjacent to Lynchburg, located directly south of the city and sandwiched between Bedford and Appomattox Counties on the southern shores of the James River.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,314 km² (507 mi²). 1,307 km² (504 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it (0.55%) is water.
