The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society offers walking tours of historic downtown Charlottesville every Saturday at 10 a.m. beginning April 7 and running through October 27. Tours leave from the McIntire Building, 200 Second Street NE, across from Lee Park. On the third Saturday of ever month guides lead an additional tour of the Downtown Mall, focusing on architecture. Stroll around the Court Square familiar to Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe. Learn about the early years of Charlottesville, its citizens, businesses and buildings. During the one-hour tours you will see reminders of over 250 years of this community’s heritage.
On the third Saturday of the month, discover architectural details of
over twenty nineteenth-century buildings dating from the period when the commercial center of Charlottesville moved from Court Square to what was then called Three Notch’d Road. Buildings constructed around 1900 will be compared and the social changes that took place on Charlottesville’s Main Street will be discussed.
For all tours, a $5.00 donation per person is suggested; no advance reservation is required. Children under 12 are free of charge. Group tours, including school groups, may be arranged for other times. Tours go on rain or shine. Call (434) 296-1492 for further information.
The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society works to nurture and promote an awareness and appreciation of the history of Charlottesville and Albemarle County through exhibits, walking tours, publications, and other programs.
