Founded in 1940, the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society seeks to study, preserve, and promote the history of Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia. The Society strives to accomplish this mission through a variety of public programs, including exhibits, publications, lectures, walking tours, oral history interviews, and various educational programs.

And, do they have the exhibits! If you visit their site, you’ll be treated with pages of old photographs, information about upcoming exhibits, and information about their resources, including their library.

The Society’s research library, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Historical Collection, is operated jointly with the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library. It contains over 4,000 books and bound periodicals, as well as thousands of photographs, manuscripts, maps, pamphlets, and vertical/subject files relating to the history of the community. It is staffed by a full-time professional librarian and many library volunteers, who assist researchers in locating and using information and materials from the varied resources in the collections.

But, you can find information online through this site as well. The Society has posted many twentieth-century photographs as well as a Flash slideshow that focuses on Vinegar Hill. The exhibits presented by the Society are partially online, and The Bulletin, The Society’s quarterly newsletter, is now available as PDF files.

The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society is located in downtown Charlottesville in the historic McIntire Building. The library is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can send email research inquiries to Mrs. Margaret O’Bryant at the address listed below. Be sure to include your name, mailing address, and phone number in the body of your email.
